The question on the "Title" haunted me since I completed my high school and joined a university. It always used to revolve around my head. Usually all I used to do was complain about how school have failed me and not teaching about anythings on what really happens on outside world or the life. This gave me a lot of room to think and research on what can we really teach and make the upcoming generations time worth in the schools. During the process I found some of things over internet and some popped up on my head upon observing ownself and asking questions as what I want my teachers/instructor to teach if I ever get the chance to study at school again. I would just like to say two answers although there are never ending things we can discuss on this topic, self-discipline and self-awareness. As a teacher/instructor if you are able to teach your students how to be self-disciplined and self-aware than sooner or later all the students you ever taught will be thanking you for being his instructor. Why I think these things to be taught rather than not other lively things like financial, techincal, practical or skills which need has a simple answer as well. Its all about teaching your students to do the fishing rather than you doing the fishing and providing them with the fish to cook. I belive anyone who is able to master those two things can achieve as greatness in his/her life.
Well that's my thought on what we should be really teaching our students at school or home. And if we observe that in context of Nepal, we are no where near of achieving such things, all we are focused on books and some practical knowledges these days especially can be observed only in few major cities. So, I wish we could just stop focusing on giving the fish to the students and start to teach them how to catch a fish. Right now I don't know how can we bring such a drastic change in our education system but someday it will sure be changed. But initially here in Nepal we need to make schools more like a place to learn morals, manners and ethics. And afterwards move to the second step of teaching self-discipline and self-awareness cause certain jump from one course to a new might cause a deviation and make us feel lost although the course does good, if we don't know where it leads it's gonna do no good. If there rises a question again on teaching the morals and ethics can make students able to catch the fish then why risk other things, what I would like to say on that is teaching should always be evolving constantly and if students know how to catch the fish themselves than self-discipline and self-awareness teaches them how to make a fishing rod. If we ever achieve such great feat, students will really start learning than just memorizing. Hope to see the change in the system soon. Well there is always the risk but some of them are worth taking if we are on the way to achieve something that's gonna make a greater difference in the system.
